Be Green this Winter

As inches of snow quickly accumulate on the Lincoln Park 2520 construction site, there is no denying that winter weather has finally moved in on Chicago. If you haven’t already, now would be a good time to winterize your home. Here are a few great eco-friendly winter tips to help the planet, as well as your wallet.

- Clean clay cat litter, sand, or fireplace/stove ash are great non-toxic de-icing substances. Chemical de-icers can be hazardous to your pets, your trees and shrubs, and the environment.

- Install an ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostat to control the temperature of your home while you are out. Another good idea is to set your outdoor and indoor lights with timers so that lights don’t stay on all night.

- After donating your old winter jacket and attire, make sure to select new jackets, hat, mittens and scarves that have been made from recycled materials.

- Recycle old newspapers by making rolled paper logs for your fireplace. Roll newspaper sheets around a broom stick until your log is the desired size, then soak your log thoroughly in water. Dry the log overnight and use like ordinary wood.

- Install plastic film on the inside of windows to improve their efficiency. The film is available at most home improvement stores.

- Change furnace filters regularly, from every one to three months.

- Save money at the gym and utilize nature’s winter playground, shovel snow, go for a hike in the snow, or build a snowman.

Not all animals are so fortunate though, which is why we are so grateful for organizations such as ALIVE Rescue. This Sustainable Animal Rescue organization, founded in 2009, has rescued 221 animals in Chicagoland. Its mission is simple; to save, rehabilitate and place abandoned, abused and stray animals into safe loving homes.

This Sunday, ALIVE Rescue is raising money for their cause in a bit of an unconventional way. They invite everyone to join them at North Avenue Beach for a quick dip in Lake Michigan. Yes you read that correctly. The 3rd Annual Shelter Shiver brings animal lovers together in the frigid January waters (thank goodness for the recent warm spell) with your choice of a full plunge, a dip of the toes or simply moral support.

Swimmers can face the waters solo or join forces on a team, with a $25 registration fee per plunger. Costumes are welcome and encouraged with prizes awarded at the Old Town Ale House post-party.

The Hancock Observatory has opened its Skating in the Sky, a 900 sq ft synthetic ice skating rink at more than 1,000 feet above the Magnificent Mile. Enjoy the skating and the views within the warmth of the Observatory.

The rink is open everyday from 9am to 11pm, through April 8th. A 25 minute skating sessions costs only $5, with $1 skate rental on the 94th floor. Don’t know how to skate? No problem. Chicago Blackhawks Youth Hockey coaches hold lessons every Monday, at 4:30pm, 5pm and 5:30pm.

Is your new year’s resolution to become more active during the winter months? Maybe it is to take full advantage of all the events our great city of Chicago has to offer.

The Chicago Park District provides an easy way to jump start either of these goals. The ice rinks are open for skating in parks all across the city, including the rink located closest to the Lincoln Park 2520 neighborhood outside of Wrigley Field. Admission to skate (except for Wrigley Field and McFetridge Sports Center) is usually free of charge and they even offer skate rental for a small fee.

New Years Day in Lincoln Park

If you are like the majority of the population, losing weight is probably on the top of your new year’s resolutions. Leave it to the Lincoln Park neighborhood to hold the year’s very first 5K event to help kick off your new healthy lifestyle.

The 27th Annual New Year’s Day 5K Run/Walk starts off 2012 on the right foot by getting people outside and active. Meet the rest of the 1500 racers at the starting line located at the south end of Lincoln Park by 11am. The course winds through the park, along the lakefront and Diversey Harbor and finishes at North Avenue Field House. Once the workout is complete, relax and ring in the new year with a post-race party at Lincoln Park neighborhood bar Sedgwicks.

All proceeds of the race benefit the Lake View Citizens’ Council, a non-profit neighborhood organization. Online pre-registration has already closed but there will be an opportunity to register the morning of the race at 9:30am in the field house near Stockton and LaSalle Drive.
